Today I wanted to talk to you about essential oils and fertility support. I know the struggle. When I was 30 years old I miscarried my first baby. I was devastated and felt so alone. I really didn’t want to talk about it to my friends. I only shared it with a few people. I grieved for months and I just couldn’t stop thinking about it. Was this my fault? Could I have done something differently?
I feel like society has come a long way since those days back in 2012. Thanks to social media and brave women who share their fertility journeys, more people are talking about it, and it’s not such a taboo topic of conversation any more. Don’t get me wrong, we still have a long way to go, but I’m here to tell you that you are not alone.
Today I want to give you some wellness tips and educate you on how essential oils can help support fertility. I wish I was more educated on essential oils back then as I am now. I struggled to get pregnant for four years and I spent that time suffering in silence, but once I gave up and decided get help from a fertility specialist, I finally ended up getting pregnant with my rainbow baby!
Self-care is the foundation of health. Baths by candle light and facial masks are nice, but those are extra! Here are are my top five self-care tips to support your fertility.
Reduce Stress: I know, I know. It’s easy to say, “don’t stress out,” but all you do is stress out because you aren’t getting pregnant and you’re mad at your body for not working. When we are stressed, our bodies go into survival mode. When our bodies are in survival mode, our “tiny stupid human” brain says, “Let’s not make a baby right now, let’s try and not get eaten by this tiger in front of us.” Our brains haven’t caught up with modern times and we are more stressed out than ever! When we are in a survival mode our body puts reproductive health on hold. Our body can’t tell if we are running late to a meeting or if we are running for our lives.
- Mindfulness exercises
- Challenge your thoughts
- Move your body
- Distract your mind from all the chatter – read/listen to a book, listen to music or a podcast.
- Recommended Oils for Stress – Lavender, Bergamot, and Roman Chamomile.
Sleep: We should get at least 7-8 hours of sleep per night. Sleep helps regulate our hormones and repair damaged cells. Not getting enough sleep can disrupt the endocrine system.
Reduce Toxic Load: There are so many ingredients in every day food and products we use that are endocrine disrupters. Processed foods have all kinds of yucky ingredients, and even real food has pesticides. Try to use non-toxic cleaning products when possible. Also, be mindful on what you put on your body. So many beauty and hygiene products like lotions, makeup, soap, toothpaste, and deodorants have ingredients that are harmful to your body.
- You don’t have to transition everything out at once. Gradually do it over time. The next time you run out of a cleaning or beauty product, buy something else that’s more clean and non-toxic.
- Oils that are great for detoxing your body are lavender, lemon, grapefruit, and tea tree! They are also great to use to make your own cleaning and beauty products!
Gut Health: Our gut plays a huge role in our physical and even mental health. Gut inflammation disrupts the reproductive system. You want to eat green leafy veggies, healthy proteins, and healthy fats. Reduce inflammatory foods like sugar, gluten, dairy, and caffeine. A good supplement to take is a high quality probiotic that your body properly absorbs.
Essential Oils: Essential oils are a great tool to add to your tool belt when it comes to fertility support. You can use them for aromatherapy, like using a diffuser, or you can use them topically. That’s where you actually apply oils on your skin. Essential oils work with your body’s chemistry to help balance hormone production.
Here are my top oils for women’s wellness and fertility support.
- Clary Sage: Apply on your abdomen during your menstrual cycle to help with cramps.
- Lavender: Helps relax the muscles, reduce stress, and promotes restful sleep.
- Bergamot: Helps reduce stress.
- Geranium, Grapefruit, and Fennel all help to balance your hormones and support the endocrine system.
- Frankincense: The king of all essential oils, is great for cellar support and inflammation.
- Copaiba: A natural cannabinoid, helps control pain, powerful antioxidant, and helps with anxious feelings.
- Peppermint: A natural astringent, helps drive oils deep into the tissue.
Warning: Make sure your oils are CPTG!
When you buy oils and you are diffusing them in the air you breathe or putting them on your body, make sure they are certified pure therapeutic grade – CPTG. Contact me for a 1:1 for a free oil coaching and I can help you find the right oils for you.
Essential oils are a huge trend right now and I see them at all the big box stores. Essential oils aren’t regulated by the FDA, so advertisers can put whatever they want on the label, like saying they are 100% all natural, but the truth is they really aren’t. They have been diluted, altered, and have fillers.
When you do become pregnant, stop using clary sage.
It has been known to cause contractions. Be careful when using CPTG oils because they are medicinal grade. It’s ok to use clary sage in the weeks before you know you are pregnant. Anything before 5 weeks won’t harm the baby, but once you find out I recommend that you don’t use it any more.
Below are some recipes that support women’s wellness! I like to call this PMS blend Resting Bitch Face. Roll this blend over your abdomen once PMS symptoms start to appear to help with mood and cramps.
You can find 10 ml rollers and fractionated coconut oil (FCO) on Amazon. FCO is liquefied coconut oil that does’t harden. When making a roller, add your essential oil first, then top it off with FCO.
Here is my favorite recipe for fertility support. I call this blend Stork. It’s helpful to roll this blend over your abdomen everyday while you are TTC. Make it a part of your daily self-care routine, like after you get out of the shower or when you brush your teeth.
When it comes to infertility, I believe in an integrative, holistic approach. Let’s be real here. I’m not going to tell you to rub some oil on your body and poof, you are going to get pregnant. There are many factors when it comes to creating a baby. If you have tried these tips and haven’t become pregnant then it’s time to see a fertility specialist. Especially if you are under 35 and have been trying for over a year or over 35 and have been trying for over 6 months.
